Minister Humphreys launches NIAH Survey of Dublin South City

Wed, 29 Nov 2017 00:05:00 GMT

Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, launched the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) Survey of Dublin South City and the accompanying book, An Introduction to the Architectural Heritage of Dublin South City, at the National Library of Ireland on Tuesday 28th November 2017.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister said that the survey and Introduction 'celebrate the architectural heritage of the city, a legacy of which we all can be very proud'.  Minister Humphreys mentioned the former Department of Industry and Commerce on Kildare Street as a personal favourite with 'its external stone carvings, by the artistic Gabriel Hayes, representing the different industries of the state, from power generation to cigarette making'.  The Minister continued by saying that 'the vast majority of the buildings included in the survey are in private ownership and their care naturally rests with their owners.  That so much of Ireland's architectural heritage has survived is testament to their commitment, interest and pride'.

Minister Humphreys emphasised the important role of the survey as a tool for assisting Dublin City Council in the protection of the architectural heritage of the city and mentioned that she has recommended 1,456 structures for inclusion on the Dublin City Record of Protected Structures.
